Hello, I’m

Stephen Downey

Information Systems Specialist

I keep hybrid IT environments—Microsoft 365, Active Directory, and Intune—running cleanly, from Azure Virtual Desktop migrations to nationwide hardware rollouts. With 15+ years of customer-facing experience behind the technical work, I translate what people actually need into systems that just work.

01 — About

The 10-second version

I’m the IT Support Administrator at Key Assets Canada, where I run the day-to-day hybrid ecosystem and lead the projects that move it forward.

My background sits at an unusual intersection: deep hands-on Microsoft stack administration and more than a decade and a half of customer service. That means infrastructure decisions get made with the people using it in mind—migrations land smoother, rollouts cause less disruption, and support requests come back less often. I’ve deployed endpoints across 7 offices nationwide, migrated teams to Azure Virtual Desktop, and introduced hardware-backed security with YubiKey—always with a bias toward documenting, mentoring, and leaving systems simpler than I found them.

Formally: CompTIA A+ CE certified, graduate of Eastern Academy’s Information Systems Specialist+ program with a 4.0 GPA, and trained in Computer Programming at KEYIN College.

04 — Projects

Selected projects

Infrastructure work rarely has a public demo—so here’s the context, the outcome, and the stack behind each one.

Cloud desktops

Azure Virtual Desktop Migration

Situation: Staff were tied to on-premises desktops with limited flexibility. Action: Planned and executed the move to Azure Virtual Desktop within the hybrid environment, wiring identity and access through Entra ID and Microsoft 365. Result: Users gained secure, centrally managed cloud desktops with day-to-day continuity preserved throughout the transition.

  • Azure Virtual Desktop
  • Entra ID
  • Microsoft 365
  • Windows

Endpoint rollout

Windows 11 Mass Deployment

Situation: The organization needed to modernize its PC fleet with minimal downtime. Action: Coordinated a mass Windows 11 deployment, standardizing builds and managing devices through Microsoft Intune. Result: A consistent, supportable endpoint baseline delivered across the environment without pulling users off work for days.

  • Windows 11
  • Microsoft Intune
  • Entra ID

Security

YubiKey Deployment for ARMS

Situation: Sensitive documents in the ARMS platform needed stronger access protection than passwords alone. Action: Rolled out YubiKey hardware credentials for secure document storage, handling provisioning and user onboarding. Result: Staff gained hardware-backed, phishing-resistant access control for the organization’s most sensitive records.

  • YubiKey / FIDO2
  • Identity & Access
  • Entra ID

Networking & procurement

Network Peripherals for 7 Offices

Situation: Seven offices across Canada needed consistent network hardware. Action: Owned procurement and installation of network peripherals for every site—sourcing, standardizing, and setting up equipment from a single project plan. Result: 7 offices moved to uniform, supported network hardware with one accountable point of contact.

  • Networking
  • Hardware Procurement
  • Peripheral Setup

Infrastructure cleanup

Shared Drive Restructuring

Situation: The shared drive had grown organically into a maze of duplicate folders and loose permissions. Action: Restructured the shared drive solution within the hybrid infrastructure, reorganizing both folder architecture and access rights. Result: A file environment that’s easier to navigate, easier to govern, and simpler to hand off.

  • Windows Server Hybrid
  • Active Directory
  • File Services

Operations

Asset Management Solution

Situation: Hardware tracking lived in spreadsheets that went stale the moment they were saved. Action: Set up and now maintain a dedicated asset management solution covering the full hardware lifecycle. Result: Procurement, deployment, and retirement decisions made on live data instead of guesswork.

  • Asset Management
  • Lifecycle Tracking
  • Procurement
